Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every week I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.
Grot Boss on Giant Squig by Christian Fritz |
Who doesn't like an orange squig? They look great in red, but it's nice to see them in some alternate schemes sometimes. This one is close enough to the red that it doesn't strike you as hugely divergent. Everything on this model is smooth and crisp, with a nice differentiation in textures. The squig looks suitably organic, while the stone looks like stone. The grot boss on top is definitely the most subdued part of the model, but I guess that's what you would expect considering they wear black robes. The addition of the spittle flying out of the squig's mouth in a nice touch and adds a bit more directionality to the model.
My favorite part is probably the base. It does such a good job of setting a sense of place, without taking away from the rest of the model. The copious amount of mushrooms fits in very well with the Moonclan theme too. They're even growing on top of the pillar! I think the overgrown look is what really sells it for me. It feels like a ruin within a fantasy world and fits very well.
Be sure to check it out on Putty and Paint to see some more views of it and show the artist some love if you like it.
Until next time,
