Mini of the Week 3-20-20

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Abaddon the Despoiler by Thor Intararangson
The update on Abaddon is a fantastic model on its own, bringing it into the grim dark standards of modern 40k. This paint job reminds me a lot of an older take on the model, but in a good way! It actually reminds me of the paint job used on the Forge World Bust they used to make. It's stylized, almost cartoony in a way, but in a cool, highly refined way. The bright colors, especially the saturated red everywhere and the blue on the sword, really harken back to the Red days of the 90s and 2nd edition. Red has even been worked into the lining of the armor. Everything is crisp, clean, and smooth.

His face is particularly well done, looking extra gaunt and pale against his dark amor. The most impressive thing though are the graphical elements. The section of a Chaos star on his tabard and the intricate pattern on the inside of the cloak help complement the stylized nature of the model, while also standing out on their own. There's also a nice Eye of Horus on the back of cloak. Almost in contrast with the rest of the model, the base has a very natural and realistic feel to it. The uneven terrain looks a lot more natural than the flatter bases we are used to. Surprisingly, this juxtaposition of styles doesn't distract from the model, but blends in perfectly while further framing the model and drawing your eye to the stylized portions of it. I think this is definitely one of my favorite renditions of the new model so far.

Be sure to check it out on Putty and Paint to see more views of it.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
