Mini of the Week 9-6-19

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Word Bearers Lord by Magobaku
This is a fairly subtle, but extremely effective conversion. When I say subtle I don't mean small or insignificant, just that it blends in so well with the existing model that you could easily think this was an alternate official sculpt from GW. The most obvious change is the helmeted head and the extension of the fur around it. I feel like this really gives the model a more menacing aesthetic compared to the bare head. The helmet chosen is a great bit, and it makes him a bit more unknowable and statuesque. This, to me, is much scarier then actually being able to see the humanity of the Marine with his face. The addition of the banner looks great as well and gave the hobbyist a perfect surface for some freehand. The freehand on this model is top notch as well. It's not just on the banner, but both shoulder pads too.

The painting is fantastic, with smooth blending and sharp highlights. I like how the highlights have a softness and sharpness to them at the same time. The color choices really work, with the neon blue standing out from the red of the armor. The base is nice and simple, but full of Chaotic character. The bubbling lava pit is a classic choice, but it works for a reason. The flaming skulls kelp tie it all together into the blue on the model. Overall, a great mini.

Be sure to check out more views of it on Putty and Paint.

Until next time,
