Mini of the Week 9-13-19

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Savage Orc Boss: "The Last One" by Mirko Cavalloni on Putty and Paint

Duals are always interesting, especially ones as dynamic and interactive as this. A lot of duals just have the two models facing off against each other with some space between them. While there's nothing wrong with that at all, it's definitely cool to see the models actually interacting. There's a ton of conversion work that went into this. The arms and weapon on the orc have been extensively reposed, and I imagine resculpted quite a bit. The poor human, or I think actually Vampire, that is losing his head over the whole thing is converted even more. I like that the head is actually parting from the body already, and the hat flying off his head just reinforces the movement of the whole thing.

The painting on this is phenomenal. I really love the skin on the orc. It's a wonderful shade of green with blues and teals used in the shadows. The blending on all of it is super smooth. It has more of a realistic feel to it, with less sharp highlights, but still retains a saturation of color that reinforces the fantastical feel of it. Lots of time models that are painted in this more realistic style are also quite desaturated, so it's nice to see a hybrid of sorts here. The freehand on the banner is great, and the blood effects are top notch. I really like how it's all positioned too, giving you a nice visual triangle, while also conveying the unstoppable momentum of the orc.

Be sure to check out more views of it on Putty and Paint.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
