Mini of the Week 8-30-19

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Soul Wars by Seyni-NDIAYE on Putty and Paint
I always love a good Soul Wars diorama, and this one doesn't disappoint. The Lord Executioner is such a strong mini visually, so it's great to see it getting a lot of use in competition pieces. I'm pretty sure the Sequitor has been converted to be in the pose as well. The coolest thing about this is the lighting. I really dig the nighttime colors used on everything. It's all dark and teal, as if it's being lit by the moon. If you look at the Stormcast you can see the hints of the actual colors of the model, which has to be a pretty hard balancing act to pull off. Swapping out the noose on the Executioner for a lamp is a brilliant choice, and it gives the model a nice focal point, as well as some cool object source lighting. The whole thing completes the visual triangle brilliantly, with you eye starting at the lantern then moving down to the Executioner. From there the ground beneath him literally slopes down to the Stormcast, who is then pointing back up towards the Nighthaunt.

The base on this diorama is great too. It's simple, but has several fun details. The zombie hand bursting from the ground near the Stormcast is a really nice touch. Everything about this model reinforces the spooky, dread filled atmosphere of the Soul Wars. The painting is smooth and crisp, and like I've already said, the use of light as well as cool and warm colors is masterful. Well deserving of the Golden Demon trophy it won indeed.

Be sure to check out more views of it on Putty and Paint.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
