Mini of the Week 5-31-19

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Abhorrant Archregant by Alex Varela on Putty and Paint
I love the lighting on this model. The warm, yet sinister red light in the bottom left of the piece contrasts perfectly with the colder, paler colors in the top right with the Abhorrant himself. The painting on this is just superb all around, which is why it won a Golden Demon. The blending on the skin is fantastic, but more importantly, the texture on the skin is very realistic. The splotchyness around the back and top of the head lend the model a feeling of realism despite the obvious fantastical nature of it. I also really like the texture on the wing. It helps draw your eye to it, which is right near his face.

The base is nice and simple, but fits the theme and frames the model wonderfully. This is a great example of how much you can do with a model as a competition piece without needing to do any conversion work.

Be sure to check out more views of it over on Putty and Paint

Until next time,
