Mini of the Week 12-28-18

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Stormcast vs Darkoath by Markus Würdinger

These two models were practically made to be set up in a duel. Their poses are so complimentary to each other I have to imagine it was done on purpose. There's not any conversion in these two that I can see, but the display base they're on is very nicely done. I can definitely imagine these two battling in some overgrown ruin, and the height the crumbled stonework gives the piece really adds to the visual interest. I really like that they took the rocks out from under their feet and instead had them posed on some stairs. Are they just meeting in battle for the first time, or is one of them pushing the other along the stairs with their attacks? You can't really tell, but it's a nice story hook either way.

All of the painting is smooth and crisp, and I really like the vibrancy of the colors. Everything is very warm and in your face in a style pretty reminiscent of 'Eavy Metal. It has a slight cartoon feel to it due to this vibrancy, but I think it only enhances the piece. It makes this feel like a piece of fantasy art you'd see on a book cover or something. The non-metallic metals are nicely done as well, though it does feel a little flat in areas. I like how the base has just enough detail painted on it to make it visually interesting, but at a level slightly below the models themselves so that it doesn't steal the spotlight. Overall I really like this and I think it really embodies the GW style.

Be sure to check it out more views of it on the official Golden Demon website.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
