Mini of the Week 5-5-17

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Tech Priest and Thallax by Neil Hollis
Neil is no stranger to the Mini of the Week, and this latest entry is just as stunning. It's easy to see why this took Gold in the Unbound category at the 2017 Horus Heresy Golden Demons. Everything on these models is stunning. The colors are rich and deep with bright and crisp highlights that stand out even from a distance. Yet, when you look at the close up shots they are still just as high of quality as you would expect. The color scheme is pretty standard for the Mechanicus, but he did it very, very well. I love how dark and vibrant the red is on his robes, and the non-metallic metals are perfectly blended. Using the effect of a bright green liquid within the Thallax's faceplate acts as a great central focus, and contrasts well with all of the red. The limited amount of freehand on the models is just enough to show off his skill and add some areas of interest and complexity, without dominating the piece.

The composition is spot on with this as well, with the Thallax, the Priest, and the small pile of skulls forming a triangle that moves your eyes around the piece. The base is simple enough that it doesn't overpower the models and acts as a nice backdrop, while still maintaining enough character that it feels like a real place. I particularly like the crushed glass all over it. It really makes it feel like these guys are in an active warzone, and not just posing around some skulls and ruined masonry. Yet again, Neil proves why he is the master of Heresy painting.

You can listen to him and Greg Dann on The Imperial Truth podcast.

Be sure to check out more views of the model on the Official Golden Demon site.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
