Mini of the Week 3-17-17

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

High Queen Khalida by Will Hahn
This Khalida is one of my all time favorite models I have seen, period, and luckily I got to see it in person. This stunning conversion took home the third place trophy in Warhammer Single Miniature at the 2013 US Golden Demons, actually beating me out for the spot, but it definitely deserved it. In fact, I remember thinking that this was going to be the first place trophy when I first saw it. Everything about it is perfect. The conversion is instantly recognizable as Khalida at a glance, but updates the model with a much more dynamic pose. I was able to talk to Will at that years Golden Demon and picked his brain a bit about it. If I'm recalling correctly the main body is the Dark Elf Sorceress, including the face. The headdress is from Apophas, the staff top from the Empire Wizard kit, the clawed hand from the female vampire, and the tattered cloak from the plastic Wight King. All of the bandages and various other bits of ornamentation, like the scarab skull belt buckle, are all sculpted. The skill with which he was able to blend all of these bits together into an incredibly cohesive model is stunning.

The painting is top notch as well, with a definite 'Eavy Metal feel to it. I love how bright and clean all of the colors are, with the red and blue working perfectly together and also being the classic Tomb Kings color scheme. When I got around to painting my own Khalida mini I took some inspiration from this one and sculpted a snake coming out of a skull on her base. I really can't pick out a single fault with this model.

You may have noticed that the picture is not the best quality. That's because I have never been able to find pictures of this online and these are actually GW's pictures from the event from the first copy of Visions with a new background by myself. I have been searching for this model for years and have never been able to find it again. If you know where there are higher quality pictures of this model please let me know! Even better yet, if you know Will Hahn let him know that I would love to get in touch with him about this mini!

Clearly I had to go with a Tomb King inspired model for this week's Mini of the Week since next Wednesday, the 22nd, sees the release of the free downloadable PDF of the Unofficial Tomb Kings Battletome for AoS.

So be sure to be back here on Wednesday to download the, as far as I'm aware, first full length fan made Battletome for AoS!

You can watch a sneak peak of the Battletome on Warhammer Weekly here.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
